What began as a routine jungle safari quickly turned into a high-stakes adventure at India’s Jim Corbett National Park, when a wild elephant suddenly charged at a group of tourists in their safari vehicles.

Video captured by Parveen Shekhawat shows the massive elephant trumpeting as it storms toward the group’s jeeps, prompting drivers to accelerate their vehicles to steer clear of the unexpected danger.

"Just a few minutes into our safari, and boom – one of the wildest moments of my life!" an Instagram post read. "A massive tusker charged straight at our gypsy out of nowhere. Heart racing, adrenaline pumping – this was raw, untamed nature at its peak."

The post added: "Grateful for the skills of our drivers who handled it like pros. Respect for these wild giants just went to another level."

Elephant attacks becoming more common

According to The Washington Post, wildlife experts say elephants have been exhibiting more aggressive behavior toward people because of growing pressure on their habitats and herds. 

The World Wildlife Fund said elephants have killed more than 200 people in Kenya over the last seven years.

In India, several hundred people perish each year because of ill-fated elephant encounters, Joshua Plotnik, an elephant behavior and cognition researcher at Hunter College in New York City, told The Washington Post.

Giraffe tosses toddler at wildlife park

Last year, a toddler trying to feed a giraffe at a Texas safari park was momentarily tossed in the air by the animal. The incident happened at the Fossil Rim Wildlife Center in Glen Rose, about 75 miles southwest of Dallas.

In 2023, a family on a safari in Africa also had the encounter of a lifetime when a lion came within feet of them at their campsite. Stunning video showed the lion wandering through the campsite before approaching the family’s table.
